The construction of the graphic for the boards came from the textile created from the parti. I tried to simplify the graphic since the textile is so complicated with its line and color value. I chose to put the graphic on one side of the board, so it shows asymmetry like the parti and not so overpowering. The golden color is to show the neutral color palette so it doesn't take away from the drawings and renderings.

The construction of the Pufferbelly Depot was very challenging with the different ceiling heights that needed to be expressed, as well as the difficult angles of the roof. It was a great accomplishment to finish it, but there was a lot of concentration in order to get the placement of the beams and post in the space.

Materials + Office Boards

For the office board, I was originally thinking of placing the study in the second story opening of the Pufferbelly Depot. The placement of the study would bring privacy and seclusion while still being part of the living space. The use of black iron for the spiral staricase and iron railing is to emphasize on the depot's historical integrity of the space. And the use of earth warm colors for the space is to bring calm thinking so the resident will find peace while reading. In addition, the curved bookcase was to bring attraction to shelf so the residents could be influenced to read one of the books.

For the materials board, I thought it was really interesting how I found a variety of way people have been able to incorporated patterns into not only fabric, but also other aspects of the space. For instance, the tiles in the bathroom and wall decor in the retail space. The rendering of my textile was into the cast iron staircase to exemplify the metal used in the lantern and incorporated the historical aspect of the Pufferbelly Depot.

In the preliminary plan, I focused on the concept words 'attraction' and 'structure' to devise the floorplan for the residence and commercial space. There are more structured spaces in the residential area to give the space a sense of logic and reasoning with the adjacent rooms. There are also curved walls in the commercial space to represent the attraction. I tried to incorporate a warm earthy color palette to express the welcomed and safe haven atmosphere.

Pufferbelly Depot: Design Process

For this residential project, it takes place at a train depot named Pufferbelly Depot.
As a historical landmark in Pullman, Washington, a featured artist will be chosen to
live and work out of this space. A residential and gallery space must be provided
for the building that can accommodate the artist's equipment and supplies.
The inspiration for this project comes from the lantern hanging at the exterior of the building.
The lantern was then abstracted to form the overall concept; structure, safety, and attraction.
The concept model was then formed from the conceptual words by constructing the essence of the lantern into a diamond structure. The metal wrapping of the lantern represents the protection the lantern has on the object inside, to show how safe it is. The focal point of the concept model is the raw material the regional artist uses for his sculptures, which is glass. The glass emanates the colors used for the textile. The model dangles very delicately and almost uneven to show the asymmetry. The stand that holds the model is in a circular shape so the attention will be appointed to the model. From the concept model, it was then expressed in the textile with the diamond shape and warm color palette.

Throughout this whole design process, it has been a challenge including and meeting the standards for the Gregory Residence. It was a little hard making the house open and spacious when the lot was on a narrow property line, but I hoped by adding volume to the roof and ceiling height, the house will stand out and give the illusion of a spacious home. I think that my concept was shown strongly throughout the residence with its extreme angles and overall unique shape. It was really important for me to incorporate indoor and outdoor living and I think I've achieved that with the stone path and large windows around the residence and ADU. Although Jack's Room seems disconnected from the rest of the house, I feel that it fits his youthful age of a growing teenager boy.

I feel that if I could make some adjustments, I would bump out the indented corner in the front of the house to add more space for the dining and living room. I would have also added a little bit more space in the bathrooms, so that someone in a wheelchair could turn around in a full circle. I think I would have also rethought the placement of furniture in the ADU. And if my materials would have arrived in time, I think my materials would have included a lot more sustainable material.

Gregory Residence: Design Process

When I first found my inspiration for this residence, I was really drawn to the melting shape and how it was rusting in the crevasses. I then started looking at the general shape of the object and abstracted angles and triangles from it's form. From that it led to my concept model which shows a contrast of metal and wood expressing the rusted metal colors. Since this residence was to be remodeled in Arizona, I thought it would only be appropriate to illustrated the sustainable material, adobe bricks in the extension of the house and ADU (accessory dwelling unit).

This dandelion seed pondling, (I think) became the inspiration for the bath/laundry design as a place of retreat for the residents. I wanted to retain its whimsical and calm essence while still adding a sense of structure to the design by using geometric elements. For this concept model, I tried to incorporate the gracefulness of the dandelion seedling, with the center shape of the structure by incorporating triangles the create a variety of perspectives.

In this presentation board, I think I should've grouped the elements of lighting and materials for both the bath and laundry to make it easier for the eyes to separate the difference between the laundry room and the bathroom. The graphic design is hidden behind the perspective sketch and floorplan, so maybe a graphic design on the top by the title would have been a better place for it. The organization on the board however are very clear as to where each fixture or material belongs. I'm satisfied with the material choices and the degree of skill in the perspective and small sketches.

In this model I wanted to achieve the precise color scheme of the wall paint, but it didn't come out exactly how I wanted it to be. The construction of the room was a little complicated separating the bath and laundry because the structure of the rooms don't exactly follow the floorplan. The arrangement of the appliances and fixtures in the room are set well and work functionally so that there are no traffic interference.

The light study helps show how much light is allowed into the space, but I think I would want to change the layout of the furniture to allow more space for the twins. Even though the bunk beds and desks are detachable, the storage units should be able the more around.

This design was inspired by an illustration in a children's book named, "How to Live Forever" by Colin Thompson. The theme for the presentation was to express those giant children's book, and have one side of the book understandable for childern, and the other side descriptive for the adults.

I think I could've worked better on the cover for the presentation board but it was hard writing on the cover because the green poster board darkened the writing. Maybe a little bit more of a book theme to the cover would make match the theme in the presentation board.

This concept model reflects the theme of the room with the fun bright colors for the boy's room. It also shows the adventure and exploration the boys can imagine with the curvy lines and layered levels. The model has a round-about view, so you can see its intricate details and different height levels.

In this presentation board I'm pretty satisfied with the way it looks. The graphics reflect my parti sketch, and is consistent throughout the three boards. Even though there is a lot of white space in my perspective sketches, the walls for the kitchen were to be an off white color, and purposely left like that so it doesn't change the integrity of the space.
The alignment of the sketches and elevations however, are a little crooked, but the labeling of the different sections throughout the boards is consistent, and easy to read. The materials should've been labeled though to identify where each materials go.

Process Poster

The artist I chose for my inspiration for the poster is Pablo Picasso. I wanted to reflect his style of painting by incorporating graphics of geometric shapes, since he was the first artist to start the cubism style of painting. I tried to use the rule of thirds as part of the set up in the organization of the poster. I also set the order of the process works from left to right, so it would be easier to understand the flow and process of how the ideas came together. I decided to chose the scriptive font type as a reflection of Picasso's own signature. The labels identifying each section of process images also help how the room was created and came to be. The contrast of the bright colors aganist the blue color allows a sense of balance througout the poster.

The geometric shapes seem to become a distraction to the poster, and I think it would look better with one single graphic background instead of a couple shapes spread throughout the poster.

Snake Chair Sketch

The chair I chose for this sketch was designed by Ron Arad, named Oh Void 2 Chair. The chair was to illustrate the negative and positive space within the photo, using the chair as the positive space, expressing its intricate detail of curves and lines. The snake was the negative space showing how balanced the chair is. By adding shading in the chair, gives the chair a sense of depth, and expresses the chair's curves.

This sketch shows different views of a basic steel framed chair with leather cushions. The side view shows the thickness of the steel as well as the cushions. I incorporated a perspective view with the sketches to give a better view of the chair.

This sketch illustrates the characteristics of the keychain by emphasizing its texture, and shading to give the sketch a sense of reality with the different curves and bold print in the WSU logo.

Chinese Wedding Textile

In the Chinese culture, animals, plants, and color were often illustrated in their silk textiles to express legends or religious beliefs.

One particular tale that was foretold by their ancestors is the tale between the Jade Dragon and Golden Phoenix. It begins with the two creatures finding a shiny pebble, and carving it into a magical pearl. The pearl was so desirous; the Queen Mother of Heaven stole the pearl from the creatures and hid it from the world. On the day of her birthday, she presented the pearl to her guest and the dragon and phoenix saw its light and fought with the Queen to get it back. When the pearl was dropped into the sky, the dragon and the phoenix flew after it, and then the pearl turned into a lake. The dragon and phoenix therefore turned into the mountains surrounding the lake. The lake was therefore named the Jade Lake.

In a traditional Chinese wedding, the phoenix is used to represent the bride, and the dragon is used to represent the groom; while both are draped in red silk since red is the color that represents happiness, luck, and joy. The creatures are usually embroidered in gold onto the couples' clothing to signify wealth.

The elements that represent a traditional Chinese wedding are used to express a vibrant textile design. The texture of the red silk shows fluidity and brings the textile to life through the circular movement of the phoenix and dragon intertwined with the rhythm of the clouds. The characters of double happiness and love are included to balance out the difference of color, and illustration.
